Herbs and Spices That Boost Oral Health - Dentist Brantford - Fairview Family Dental

Maintaining good oral health is crucial, and most people find it very hard. However, some herbs and spices that can save your job interview, reduce your dental checkups, and improve your overall health. Some of the herbs and spices include:

Bloodroot

This herb derives its name from the red-orange sap that seeps out of the roots when cut. The fluid contains sanguinarine (an antimicrobial compound that kills germs that cause gingivitis and plaque). OTC toothpaste and mouthwashes contains bloodroot, and it is the recommended product to purchase. Chewing it raw can cause mouth lesions, not to mention the red-orange juice on your teeth, lips, and tongue!

Holy Basil

Holy basil is also known as tulsi, and it kills germs that hide in between teeth. To benefit from the astringent properties of holy basil, gargle tulsi tea each morning. The drink offers better freshening results when compared to some mouthwashes.

Camellia Sinensis (green tea)

Green tea contains catechins (a substance that kills bacteria that cause plaque and bad breath). Therefore, instead of taking coffee, it is advisable to try green tea instead.

Cloves

Clove contains eugenol (a compound that is anti-fungal, anti-septic, and anesthetic). If you have a toothache, you can use cloves to treat the pain. Crush some cloves and put some clove oil on cotton. Use the cotton wool to rub the aching tooth to relieve pain. A study conducted in 2006 showed that clove is just as effective as benzocaine (an ingredient used to treat mouth pain).

Nutmeg

Nutmeg contains the same compound as cloves (eugenol). Ergo, nutmeg contains antimicrobial properties. Nutmeg is a natural remedy in killing bacteria that cause plaque and bad breath. Also, if you have a tooth inflammation or pain, you can rub nutmeg oil on the tooth or drink nutmeg tea to relieve the pain.

Before you try any natural remedy, it is advisable to seek professional advice from your doctor or dentist.
