What To Do in a Dental Emergency

Knocked-Out Tooth

• Pick up the tooth by the crown (top), not the root.
• Gently rinse it with water. Do not scrub it.
• Try to put the tooth back in its socket or store it in cold milk.
• Apply pressure to stop bleeding and call us immediately.

Chipped or Broken Tooth

• Save any pieces of the tooth, if possible.
• Call us to explain what happened. Small chips can be fixed with a filling, while larger breaks may need a crown or root canal.

Bitten Tongue or Lip

• Use a clean cloth to apply pressure to stop bleeding.
• Use an ice pack to reduce swelling.
• If the bleeding doesn’t stop, go to the hospital.

Object Stuck Between Teeth

• Try to remove the object with dental floss.
• Do not use sharp objects that could hurt your gums or teeth.
• If you can’t remove it, call us for help.

Toothache

• Rinse your mouth with warm water.
• Take over-the-counter pain medicine.
• Use a cold pack on your face to reduce swelling.
• Call us to check the problem. Toothaches can be caused by cavities, infections, or injuries.

Broken Jaw

• Go to the hospital right away.
• On your way, use ice to control swelling.
