What To Do in a Dental Emergency
Knocked-Out Tooth
- Pick up the tooth by the crown (top), not the root.
- Gently rinse it with water. Do not scrub it.
- Try to put the tooth back in its socket or store it in cold milk.
- Apply pressure to stop bleeding and call us immediately.
Chipped or Broken Tooth
- Save any pieces of the tooth, if possible.
- Call us to explain what happened. Small chips can be fixed with a filling, while larger breaks may need a crown or root canal.
Bitten Tongue or Lip
- Use a clean cloth to apply pressure to stop bleeding.
- Use an ice pack to reduce swelling.
- If the bleeding doesn’t stop, go to the hospital.
Object Stuck Between Teeth
- Try to remove the object with dental floss.
- Do not use sharp objects that could hurt your gums or teeth.
- If you can’t remove it, call us for help.
Toothache
- Rinse your mouth with warm water.
- Take over-the-counter pain medicine.
- Use a cold pack on your face to reduce swelling.
- Call us to check the problem. Toothaches can be caused by cavities, infections, or injuries.
Broken Jaw
- Go to the hospital right away.
- On your way, use ice to control swelling.
