Protecting our Brantford Community: April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

At Fairview Family Dental, we are proud to call Brantford home. Our mission has always been to keep our neighbours smiling; however, our care goes deeper than just aesthetics. This April, we are observing the 22nd Annual Oral Cancer Awareness Month to shed light on a disease that affects thousands of Canadians every year.

Oral cancer often flies under the radar because its early symptoms can feel like a minor annoyance. However, staying informed and proactive is the most effective way to protect yourself and your loved ones.

What is Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer is a type of head and neck cancer that can develop on the lips, tongue, inner cheeks, roof of the mouth, or throat. In Canada, it is estimated that in 2025, 8,100 people will be diagnosed with head and neck cancer (which includes oral cavity cancer), and 2,200 will die from it.

Spotting the Signs: The "Two-Week Rule"

Many symptoms of oral cancer can be easily overlooked, such as a cut that does not seem to heal or a sore spot from a "burnt" tongue. At our Brantford office, we tell our patients to follow the Two-Week Rule: if a symptom lasts longer than 14 days, it needs a professional look.

  • Sores: Ulcers or sores on the lips or inside the mouth that do not go away.
  • Color Changes: Red or white patches on the gums, tongue, or mouth lining.
  • Pain and Numbness: Persistent pain or a "pins and needles" feeling in the mouth or lips.
  • Difficulty: Trouble chewing, swallowing, or moving the jaw or tongue.
  • Swelling: Any lumps or thickening of the tissues in the mouth or neck.

Understanding the Risk Factors

While oral cancer can affect anyone, certain factors increase the risk:

  • Tobacco Use: Smoked or chewed.
  • Alcohol: Frequent use, especially with tobacco.
  • HPV: A significant rising cause in Canada.
  • Sun Exposure: High risk for lip cancer.
  • Genetics: Family history and hygiene.

The Importance of Early Detection

Did You Know? In Canada, the 5-year survival rate for oral cancer is approximately 75% when caught in the early stages. However, if detected late, that rate drops to less than 20%.

Because more than half of cases are not caught until they are advanced, regular dental check-ups are your first line of defense. During your routine visit at Fairview Family Dental, we perform a quick, painless oral cancer screening.

Let’s Make Prevention Our Goal

Do not wait for a small problem to become a big one. This April, commit to your health by scheduling a comprehensive exam.
