CDCP and Your Dental Coverage: You Might Still Qualify
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is helping more people get access to dental care. But many are asking:
“What if I already have dental coverage? Can I still qualify?”
The short answer: maybe. It depends on the type of coverage you have and your current situation.
At Fairview Family Dental in Brantford, we want to help you understand how it works—because you might qualify even if you think you don’t.
CDCP Eligibility: The Basics
You may qualify for the CDCP if you:
- Don’t currently have access to private dental insurance
- Are a Canadian resident for tax purposes
- Have an adjusted family net income under $90,000
- Meet the age and rollout criteria (phased in from Dec 2023 through 2025)
What Kind of Coverage Do You Have?
🟢 Government Dental Programs (like provincial or federal programs)
You may still qualify.
The CDCP is designed to work alongside these programs. It helps cover services that might not be included in your existing public plan.
🔴 Private or Employer Dental Plans
You likely won’t qualify.
The CDCP is for people who don’t have access to any private dental insurance.
When You Might Still Be Eligible — Even With Coverage
- You’re on a government program: CDCP can help fill in the gaps where your public plan doesn’t cover everything.
- You lost private coverage: If you used to have dental insurance through work (or a private plan), but it ended, you may now qualify. What matters is whether you have active private coverage right now, not what you had in the past.
What Should You Do?
- Don’t assume you’re not eligible just because you had coverage in the past.
- Figure out what kind of coverage you currently have—is it public or private?
- Check your status—especially if your private plan recently ended.
What the CDCP Covers
The CDCP includes many common dental services, such as:
- Exams and cleanings
- Fillings and root canals
- Dentures and crowns (some services may require pre-approval or co-pays)
